Stocks and currencies are the two most popular avenues. With stocks you are buying into the company shares and with currencies you can either trade on local currencies under FOREX trading or based on dollar values under dollar trading. Stock trading has been popular with many seasoned investors. The currency trading is a more recent phenomenon and still many people are in testing waters at this point.

Stock trading is based on purchasing and selling shares of a company based on how the individual perceives the future of the company. So some people would think that the stock would do well in near future while others take a longer term approach. Due to different targets the perception is different and this gives a lot of buyers and sellers for the stocks.

With currency trading like FOREX trading, a similar approach is taken towards currencies. Based on the government holdings, borrowing, loans, trade, etc the currency exchange rate between two nations changes regularly. People can tap into these changes to make money.

The dollar trading is similar to FOREX; it is just that you are sticking to one currency which is universally accepted rather than going all over the place with the trading currency.
