Options work just as well in a down market. The option quote table below contains tangible put option prices (thanks to Yahoo Finance) for Hewlett Packard (HPQ). Purchasing put options is a bearish methodology as the value of a put option increases as the cost of the underlying stock decreases. Hewlett Packard stock is currently trading at 32.78. Let's assume that HPQ stock declinesin price 10% from 32.78 to 29.50. Let’s focus on the March 30-Strike put option (circled).

The truth on trading “credit spreads”…You will learn why it is so important if you do not know how to correctly handle your option positions. Even though it is a well known trade we will take a good look at what can happen using this particular spread. This seems to be a good trade, but until you work with this trade, you will not know the high risk it can be. If it is traded alone this options “credit spread” can be very risky. By trading it alone I mean that it is not being protected by another option trade.

Online investing in stocks is no little feat. The skills needed to succeed in the world of stocks require more than simple skills that could be learned in a business school and it goes beyond gut feelings or hunches. To succeed in the stock market, you need to know every bit of what you are doing and you have to be good at what you do. This entails having an analytical mind, knowing how to forecast trends and being able to make decisions within split seconds without being impulsive. To develop these kind of skills, a virtual stock exchange is the best place for taking the right classes.

According to Wikipedia, Karl Pearson, Fellow of the Royal Society, established the discipline of mathematical statistics. Karl Pearson first used the term “Standard Deviation” in writing in 1894 following its use in his lectures. Standard Deviation is very important in financial matters. The standard deviation on the rate of return of an investment is a measure of the volatility of the investment.
